THRESHERS FALL, MILNER EXTENDS HIT STREAK TO 17
Clearwater’s late bid for a rally fell short Friday night as they lost 5-3 to the visiting Jupiter Hammerheads in the third of a four-game set at Bright House Field. The Threshers fell to 14-21 on the season while Jupiter improved to 17-18. In the losing effort, Gus Milner singled in the 2nd to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, only the sixth time that has been done in the Florida State League since 2006.

Jupiter got on the board first scoring three runs in the 6th off of Clearwater starter Zack Segovia. Segovia, in his first start this season for the Threshers, gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out four in 5.2 innings. The Threshers answered in the bottom half of the inning after a Matt Spencer sacrifice fly scored Quintin Berry who doubled to lead off the inning before stealing third.

The Hammerheads scored a run in both the 7th and 8th innings to push their lead out to 5-1. Christopher Leroux came into pitch for Jupiter in the bottom of the 8th inning and promptly hit Thresher catcher Tuffy Gosewisch with a pitch. After a Fidel Hernandez strikeout, Quintin Berry pulled Clearwater within two when he deposited a long fly over the left field fence.

Clearwater tried to get something going against Jupiter’s closer Adalberto Mendez with a one-out walk by John Urick, but he was only the baserunner the Threshers could muster. The two teams meet for the finale of the series on Saturday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM with fireworks immediately following the game.
THRESHERS BLAST HAMMERHEADS
The Clearwater Threshers extended their winning streak to four by using the long ball to defeat the Jupiter Hammerheads Thursday night at Bright House Field. With the win, Clearwater improved to 14-20 for the season while Jupiter fell to 16-18. Jake Blalock and Welinson Baez homered back-to-back in a 6-run first to help send Clearwater on their way to the 12-3 victory. Edgar Garcia improved to a perfect 5-0 on the mound, scattering seven hits over six innings while giving up just two runs.

The Threshers fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first after Smelin Perez scored following his leadoff double to start the game. The home team would respond with a five-hit, six-run. Quintin Berry and P.J. Antoniato put the pressure on Hammerhead starter Graham Taylor with singles to start the bottom half of the inning. Matthew Spencer followed with a triple to put Clearwater up 2-1. Clay Harris then drew a walk from Taylor before Gus Milner extended the lead to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly to plate Spencer. Blalock’s second home run of the season scored Harris, and Baez connected for his first of year to make the score 6-1.

Taylor would leave the game after a bases-loaded walk with no outs scored Harris, his second of three runs scored on the night. Harris scored his third run to start the 7th on a solo-shot over the left field fence. The righty’s bat has been on fire, hitting .529 in the last five games. Tuffy Gosewisch added a solo-shot of his own in the 6th to give the Threshers four on the night.

Six Threshers had multi-hit games, including Blalock’s 3-hit performance, as Clearwater pounded out 17 hits against Hammerhead pitching. Gus Milner had one of those 17 to extend his current hitting streak to 16 games, the longest to date this season in the Florida State League. He's hit .387 (24-62) over the course of the streak. The two teams square off for the third of the four-game series with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM at Bright House Field.
THRESHERS EDGE HAMMERHEADS
The Threshers edged the visiting Jupiter Hammerheads 6-5 last night to take game one of the four game series.

Gus Milner extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single and an RBI and John Urick drove in two runs. Former ninth-rounder Andy Cruse recorded his first win of the season, giving up two runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Brian Schlitter pitched the last 2 2/3 innings to record his fourth save.

Reigning National League MVP Jimmy Rollins, on a rehabilitation assignment from Philadelphia, played all nine innings and created some excitement for the fans with several stellar defensive plays. Rollins was 0-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored. The Threshers have won 4 of their last five games. The action continues tonight at Bright House Field at 7:00 p.m.
